Participation of the Municipal and Historical Archives of the City of Athens in the 2nd Scientific Conference “Education for Global Active Citizenship”, organized by Institute of Educational Policy (IEP)

The Municipal and Historical Archives of the City of Athens and the Hellenic Association for the Promotion of Rhetoric in Education participated today, Friday, April 24, 2026, in the proceedings of the 2nd Scientific Conference “Education for Global Active Citizenship.”

In their remarks, the Head of the Archive, Ms. Vasiliki Sfika, and the President of the Association, Ms. Evangelia Loutrianaki, presented the innovative educational program “Short Lessons in Democracy for Tomorrow’s Citizens,” which is being implemented in partnership with the Hellenic Association for the Promotion of Rhetoric in Education.

As Ms. Sfika emphasized, this experiential workshop is addressed to students and utilizes minutes of the Athens City Council as primary archival material. Through rhetorical activities and simulated council meetings, conducted by the students themselves, concepts such as deliberation and equality before the law become subjects of deep comprehension. At the same time, students are guided toward a critical reflection, connecting the historical data drawn from the archival collections with contemporary global challenges, such as the refugee crisis, digital privacy, and climate justice.

In closing, it was underlined that through this specific program, archival research is freed from its strict academic boundaries. It is transformed into an act of democratic awakening, highlighting the Municipal and Historical Archives of Athens City as a living laboratory of ideas that shields the younger generation against apathy and authoritarianism.
