Athens Municipal Archives
Athens Municipal Archives serve as the custodian of the capital’s modern historical and social trajectory. Beyond safeguarding, conserving, and digitizing official records dating from 1841 to the present −such as the City Council Meetings Minutes− the department actively collects and curates rich audiovisual material. Its plural collections range from the archives of the National Garden and municipal cemeteries to annual budgets, topographical plans, significant maps, and private collections, all of which reveal unknown facets of Athens’ evolution through time.
The Archives aim to be open and outward-looking. Through the comprehensive digitization of records and strategic partnerships with universities, research centers, and other archival institutions, as well as by organizing events, exhibitions, educational programs, and digital presentations, we seek to bring the history of modern Athens (from the 19th to 21st centuries) into the contemporary public sphere. Athens transformed from a small village into a bustling European capital, marked by its selection as Greece’s capital (1834). Our vision is for the valuable information we preserve to become an interdisciplinary tool for researchers, a source of inspiration for creators, and an integral part of knowledge for every citizen.
