The document we are presenting this month takes us to the heart of the German Occupation, highlighting the social welfare policies of the local government and specifically of the Municipality of Athens concerning the food crisis during the German Occupation.
During the City Council meeting on April 20, 1943, the provision of an extraordinary Easter relief benefit to destitute citizens was discussed and approved. More specifically:
-
The establishment of a committee is decided for the discreet support of destitute intellectuals and scholars of the time, who were unable to present themselves at public wheat distribution points.
-
Following a directive from the Ministry of Interior, the maximum limit of the relief benefit per family is increased from 2,000 to 5,000 drachmas.
-
A sum of 7,000,000 drachmas is allocated in the 1943-44 budget exclusively for the aforementioned Easter relief benefits.
