Start of Educational Programs for the 2025–2026 School Year

The Historical Archive of the Municipality of Athens is once again implementing the educational program
“Small Lessons in Democracy for Tomorrow’s Citizens”, addressed to 6th‑grade primary school students and 9th‑grade junior high school students.
Historians and Archivists of the Archive visit school classrooms and, through a first introduction using a PowerPoint presentation, explain what an archive is and what unique historical documents are preserved by the Historical Archive of the country’s first municipality.
Students are then given the opportunity to explore archival boxes containing original material from the period.
During the workshop, students receive a worksheet presenting an actual discussion of the Municipal Council.
They are then invited to work in groups and reenact a modern‑day simulation of the session, supporting or challenging the viewpoints expressed in the discussion.
The total duration of the workshop is set at 2 teaching hours.
Two worksheets have been prepared in collaboration with the
Hellenic Union for the Promotion of Rhetoric in Education:
  • Historical Memory and the Municipality of Athens:
Based on a 1974 Municipal Council discussion regarding the renaming of Vasilissis Sofias Avenue,
the worksheet explores historical memory and public space.
  • Metapolitefsi and the Municipality of Athens:
Based on a 1975 Municipal Council discussion regarding the destruction of books in the Municipal Library purchased during the Dictatorship,
the worksheet examines the concept of democracy and censorship.
At the same time, for the first time this year, we are opening our space to groups of students so that, as “historical researchers”,
they can develop skills in locating information through archival sources and gain historical knowledge through hands‑on experience.
