The Municipality of Athens (Department of the Municipal and Historical Archive) announces its collaboration in the historical tour organized by the Historical Archive of the Cultural Foundation of Piraeus Bank, on the occasion of the 130th anniversary of the first modern Olympic Games held in Athens (April 6–15, 1896).
The event focuses on the urban and historical transformation of the wider Ilissos river area, featuring the Zappeion Megaron and the Panathenaic Stadium as primary landmarks.
The guided tour explores, among other subjects, the following themes:
· The transition from the institution of industrial and commercial national festivals, in the form of the Zappeian Olympiads, to the international Olympic movement.
· The restoration in marble of the Panathenaic Stadium as one of the first public works of national scope, in preparation for the 1896 Games and the Greek Intercalated Games of 1906.
· The urban evolution and the transformations of the Ilissian fields (Ardittos Hill, the Propylaea of the Stadium, the Thon Panorama).
