Who are we

Athens Municipal Archives operate under the Directorate of Decentralization and Administration bearing the title “Department of the Municipal and Historical Archive.” In accordance with the Internal Service Statutes (O.E.Y. Municipality of Athens, Gov. Gazette B’ 5713/19-12-2018), it is responsible for the identification, rescue, conservation, classification, and availability for research of records related to the administrative, economic, cultural, and social history of the Municipality. Furthermore, it supervises the active records of the municipal directorates. Specifically:

  • It holds the authority for designing and implementing the Archival Policy of the Municipality of Athens.
  • It identifies, collects, preserves, classifies, and catalogues archival records produced by the Municipality and its supervised entities, documenting the city’s administrative, economic, social history, and cultural heritage.
  • It ensures the conservation, reproduction, and availability for research (developing finding aids, granting study permits) of both physical and digital archival collections.
  • It operates a reading room and a thematic library featuring publications, articles, and academic research regarding the history of Athens.
  • It enriches its holdings by acquiring new collections through donations and other means.
  • It acts as the official liaison between Municipal Directorates and the General State Archives (G.S.A.)the national archival foundation of Greece− on matters of Archival Policy.
  • It exercises supervision over the active records of Municipal Directorates, providing expertise and facilitating standard procedures for the maintenance, management, and disposition of contemporary records.
  • It organizes and coordinates a network of liaison officers within the Municipal Directorates.
  • It provides necessary guidelines for the recording, filing, classification, storage, and conservation of the Municipality’s archival material.
  • It serves as an advisory service to the Mayor of Athens on any issue regarding archives and archival policy.
  • It supports and promotes scientific, technical, and cultural cooperation with domestic and international institutions (e.g., Universities, cultural foundations, legal entities, state services).
  • It maintains a registry of incoming and outgoing documents and handles all secretarial obligations arising from its mandate.
